Did you know that you become a slave by choice?
If you’re really into having a lot of sex, you’re a slave to sex. I’m sure some would read this and give a thumbs up and an “Alright!” But we all know the consequences of this kind of slavery, don’t we? Disease, unwanted pregnancies that sometimes end in murder (as in, abortion), and the emptiness in your heart. It’s there, but many just ignore it and try to fill it with more sex…It never gets filled, believe me.
If you’re really into making the big bucks and being rich, you’re a slave to money. I’m sure some would read this and give a thumbs up and an “Alright!” But the adage says, “Money doesn’t buy happiness.” Do you know what that means? Enough will never be enough. Besides, you can’t take it with you, can you? All it will do is give you a fancy casket to be buried in. Wow, that really means a lot doesn’t it?
If you’re really into getting stuff, you’re a slave to material things. I’m sure some would read this and give a thumbs up and an “Alright!” Do you really want to be a slave to things? Things will never love you back. Things will always break down and fail you. You can buy the coolest car there is. But there will be an even cooler one next month. You can’t take this stuff with you either. Unless you want to buy an extra large burial plot and bury it all with you. You’re guaranteed to be the victim of grave robbers then. But it won’t matter to you, because you’re dead.
If you’re really into partying and getting high, you’re a slave to booze and alcohol (whether you are or are not an addict). I’m sure some would read this and give a thumbs up and an “Alright!” Being a slave to something that will eventually kill or land you in jail seems pretty much about as stupid as you can get.
So what do I have to say about this? Not a whole lot, but a very close friend of mine said this:
“Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.”
Later on, a very wise man said this:
Romans 6:5-7, 16-18
For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin.
Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness? But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
If you are into serving God then you are a slave of righteousness. I’m sure some would read this and raise an eyebrow and an “Okay, you’re nuts!” Having joy under any circumstance life may throw at you. Being content under any condition. Knowing love that you never thought existed. Being loved in way you never thought possible. Your every need being met. This is what happens when you’re a slave to righteousness. And the icing on the cake; your life isn’t over when you die and you get to take all of this with you.
I want to be a slave to righteousness.
How about you?
